ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a ceramics artist and educator, creating functional and sculptural work focused on connection, narrative and liminal spaces. I use clay as a canvas to paint and build surface and texture that invites inquiry and curiosity. By initiating a story for the viewer to sit with and connect to, my hope is for them to ultimately experience their own narrative. My functional work explores elevating everyday objects into art pieces while continuing to focus on form and usage. I envision my art as ritual pieces, a tactile meditation and reflection. The impact of place, nature, and home interests me and these influences show up regularly in my art. I allow exploration of the media in my studio practice to guild me and build upon these ideas and other concepts in my work including themes of shadow self, collective consciousness, duality, vulnerability, reflection and healing. Working with clay is a form of connection: connection with the earth, connection with time and space and the history of people before and after me, connection with community and connection with self.
