ARTIST STATEMENT

My architecture training gave me an incredible foundation in broadly applicable principles of design and creativity, and it instilled in me a deep appreciation for process, to the point that I consider process to be the core experience of making art, with any products that emerge serving as the happy souvenirs. I earned my degree at a time when architecture was still designed by hand on paper, and that tactile work, along with architecture’s deep appreciation of materiality, was formative for me.

As a visual artist I favor abstract geometric work using a variety of media and modes. I draw inspiration from gothic articulation, palimpsest, and wabi-sabi as well as such artists as Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Kenneth Martin, Mark Rothko, and Kurt Schwitters. I like to set up rigid frameworks but then leave room for accidents and imperfections that show my human hand in the work—a quality that has become even more interesting to me as the world around us is increasingly created digitally and even using artificial intelligence.
