SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Apr/May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Carol Retsch Bogart\, Shelly Hehenberger\, Linda Prager\, and guest artists Doug Dotson and Jane Filer. \n\n\n\nWe’re holding a special closing reception for this show on May 10 from 6 pm -9 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol Retsch Bogart\n\n\n\nCarol’s love of collage and mixed media touches on all manner of materials. She’s experimented with textiles in recent years\, and for this show\, decided to dive deeper. In fact\, six of the nine pieces are textiles. \n\n\n\n“I am enthralled with textiles of other lands – from the silk kimonos of Japan to the cotton kantha cloth of India\,” Carol said. She adds her own silkscreened cloth to the mix. She continues\, “making marks\, shapes\, and images where none existed before forms a constant interplay between the materials and me.” \n\n\n\nA former therapist\, Carol has long been intrigued by the complicated nuances and layers of people’s lives\, feelings and experiences. For this show she explores the layers of texture in cloth – some observable and some hidden – just as in our lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShelly Hehenberger\n\n\n\nHeavily applied textured layers of oil paint and cold wax mixtures help Shelly express her concept of “Earth Time.” That is the passively infinite movement of time which directs the path of all life. \n\n\n\nShelly’s goal is to invite you to contemplate Earth Time as you might approach the textural bark of a tree\, or the persistent growth of stalactites in a cave\, or the complexity of an ocean reef. These natural forms and patterns grow and reform like the layered surfaces of her paintings in this exhibit. \n\n\n\nShelly explains\, “Through my work\, I hope to remind the viewer (as well as myself) of our birthright connection to the mysterious expanse of Earth Time and to allow it to teach us a deeper way to live and breathe in this world.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Prager\n\n\n\nLinda’s work is inspired by many things – architecture\, nature\, art in all its forms\, and\, the clay itself. \n\n\n\nThe pieces in this show express Linda’s reaction to the works of the other exhibiting artists. She explains\, “I became excited thinking about how I could create work that would talk to\, and connect with\, their work.” Linda went with bolder\, brighter color combinations for many of these piece\, while some express softer\, more muted colors to provide some quiet focus for the eyes\, and to reflect Linda’s quieter thoughts. \n\n\n\nAs you look at Linda’s work\, think about the layers of color and texture\, and consider how that relates to the object’s form. These pieces are sculptural and beautiful\, but they’re also functional vessels created for everyday use. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJane Filer\n\n\n\nIn Jane’s work\, you are transported to worlds of wonder and supernatural experiences. These colorful paintings tell stories rooted in what it means to be human. \n\n\n\nJane has made homes in North Carolina — at the beach and in the woods. She spends time in New Mexico and the Florida Keys. In her works\, those environments are depicted in ethereal ways. She explains that her paintings\, “are vehicles. They are equations and visual stories. They are teleportation beams\, if you dare to take the ride. They are my offspring. They are what I have spent my life nurturing and putting out in the world.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoug Dotson\n\n\n\nDoug creates pottery for daily use\, looking to the simplicity and strength of natural forms for inspiration. He makes pots\, “in a way that shows the marks of my hands\, the tools I use\, and the fire that transforms mud into pottery. I want the hardy\, rustic feel and appearance of my pottery to be as grounding to the pot’s eventual owner as it is to me when I make it.”

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit May/Jun 2024
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception May 24 from 6-9 pm. There will also be a Second Friday reception on June 14. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Carroll Lassiter\, Peg Bachenheimer\, guest artists Deborah Harris\, Judith Ernst\, and Kathy Armacost. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarroll Lassiter\n\n\n\nMoving through the quiet areas of North Carolina\, Carroll looks for that perfect moment when light and landscape meet. She notes the three stages of her art process: \n\n\n\nFirst there is inspiration. A thrill or energy is generated by the angle of light\, a particular form\, a relationship of sky to ground. \n\n\n\nThen the work begins in capture. Reaching to recreate the specific moment of sensory excitement. \n\n\n\nAnd finally\, magic happens when that delight is transmitted to the viewer. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeg Bachenheimer\n\n\n\nPeg is an intuitive\, abstract painter inspired by nature\, memories\, life and her feelings. She explains\, “as I paint a memory or feeling emerges and becomes part of the process of building layers of color and texture. These memories are based on places I’ve been\, music I’ve heard\, people I’ve connected with and experiences I’ve had.” \n\n\n\nSometimes her work is abstract and sometimes landscape based. This series represents the emotional impact as she leaves her home of 37 years to find a new place and way to live. And\, some of the paintings are about her feelings of grief and growing acceptance of the recent loss of her sister\, Katharine. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeborah Harris\n\n\n\nThe whiteness of the clay body\, black sgraffito imagery\, along with the celadon glaze used by Deborah\, creates work reminiscent of the Cizhou kilns from the Song Dynasty of China. Deborah is inspired and motivated by the designs of this time period – as they express the natural world with insects and plants along with mythical creatures. \n\n\n\nDeborah believes hand crafted functional pottery serves an intimate connection between user and herself. Objects handled during everyday routines become familiar and comfortable. You have to see\, hold and use her works to truly enjoy their unique beauty. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJudith Ernst\n\n\n\nJudith’s work as a ceramist focuses on the interplay of traditional forms and sculptural expression. She uses the vessel form conceptually because it has an inner dimension surrounded by an outer surface that interacts with the outside world. \n\n\n\nShe plays with this dichotomy in the wonderfully complex and alluring pieces on display in this exhibit. She explains that a closed form is naturally extroverted. But her vessels\, with small openings to an interior\, suggest an introversion – with a mysterious inner space. \n\n\n\nThe changing angles of the various connecting planes of her work leads the eye to the inside of the vessel\, opening a dialogue between the vessel’s outer planes and inner spaces. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKathy Armacost\n\n\n\nKathy’s work is directed by nature\, history\, architecture\, dreams\, and everything else she comes in contact with. She explains\, “I don’t always know how a painting starts; sometimes an image or color\, texture\, music or even a scent will stay with me and push me toward a beginning. I like to bring to the work all the contradictions\, doubt and humor of the day.” \n\n\n\nHer goal is to keep the work alive. And the atmospheric mystery that surrounds you when you stand before her pieces will draw you in to that living world. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work
