SUMMARY:Landscape Art: Abstract vs Representational
DESCRIPTION:This invite-only event is not open to the general public. If you want to attend\, please consider supporting FRANK by joining our Friends of FRANK Membership Program. Your support helps FRANK achieve its community education and outreach goals. \n\n\n\nFRANK Gallery artists\, Carroll Lassiter and R. Scott Horner\, will talk about their work and give you insights into their processes. Carroll’s representational landscape paintings aim to faithfully represent the natural world\, while Scott’s abstract paintings convey emotions\, impressions\, or ideas about the landscape through non-literal means. \n\n\n\nIs one way better than the other? Well\, you may not get the answer to that question\, but you will come away with a fuller understanding of these two approaches to landscape painting.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Feb/Mar 2024
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Luna Lee Ray\, Peter Filene and Natalie Boorman\, with guest artists Jason Smith and Adriana Ameigh. \n\n\n\nThe Opening Reception for this exhibit is on Friday\, March 8\, from 6 pm to 9 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuna Lee Ray\n\n\n\nA mixed media artist\, Ray draws from the rich tapestry of nature and the ever-changing seasons. Infused with a dreamy and ethereal quality\, her artwork transcends conventional boundaries\, inviting viewers into a realm of light layers and subtle textures. Ray captures the essence of the natural world\, weaving together textures and hues that mirror the shifting landscapes of the earth. Through her mesmerizing compositions\, she invites us to pause\, reflect\, and immerse ourselves in the boundless beauty of the world around us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNatalie Boorman\n\n\n\nBoorman’s creative journey revolves around the ancient techniques of pinch pottery\, employing both pit firing and raku firing methods to bring her pieces to life. Her artistic vision is embodied in the organic essence of her creations\, each bearing the distinctive allure of smokey hues and a cool\, natural aesthetic. Through the transformative process of pit and raku firing\, Boorman’s pottery transcends the ordinary\, embracing the unpredictability of the elements to imbue her works with a timeless\, earthy charm. Each of her pieces becomes a vessel of storytelling\, echoing the whispers of ancient traditions while inviting contemplation and admiration for the raw beauty of nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Filene\n\n\n\nPhotographer Filene’s mastery lies in the realm of double exposure and photo collages. With a deft hand and a discerning eye\, Filene seamlessly blends multiple images to create visually captivating compositions and collages that transcend conventional boundaries. Each piece is a testament to his innovative approach\, where layers of imagery intertwine with a painterly result. Through his art\, Filene invites viewers to embark on a journey of exploration\, where reality and imagination converge in a mesmerizing tapestry of visual storytelling. His work serves as a testament to the endless possibilities of photographic expression\, inviting audiences to perceive the world through a lens of boundless creativity and innovation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJason Smith\n\n\n\nSmith\, an accomplished sculptor\, transitioned from a distinguished career as a jewelry artist to pursue his passion for sculptural expression. In his artistic journey\, sculpture has emerged as his primary focus\, with a diverse exploration of mediums\, yet metal remains his preferred material due to its strength\, malleability\, and inherent beauty. Smith’s sculptural works resonate with abstraction\, where the manipulation of form and space takes center stage. Through the skillful interplay of rhythm\, action\, and movement\, his compositions exude a sense of implied energy\, inviting viewers to delve into the dynamic narratives woven within his work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdriana Ameigh\n\n\n\nKnown for her vibrant and colorful mixed media paintings and sculptures\, Ameigh’s work exudes a dynamic energy that brings her pieces to life. With an innate understanding of color\, Ameigh’s creations pulsate with vitality\, captivating viewers with their kaleidoscopic brilliance. Through her art\, she endeavors to create abstract paintings that strike a delicate balance between fluid movement\, tactile textures\, and uplifting hues. Each painting and every sculpted form invites exploration\, revealing optimistic narratives that resonate with the essence of hope and possibility. Ameigh’s work serves as a testament to the transformative power of art\, inspiring audiences to immerse themselves in the boundless realm of imagination and creativity.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Jan/Feb 2024
DESCRIPTION:Nerys Levy\n\n\n\nNerys Levy’s work is largely inspired by her on site drawings and paintings from all over the world. Her work on Polar Regions emanates from her “on site” work in the Antarctic and the Norwegian Arctic while her ongoing Italian and British works are inspired by annual visits to Italy and Britain. This show features paintings from her Italian series. Nerys Levy believes that witnessing and documenting antiquity and the forms and forces of nature at source bring an important “authentic” element to an art work. \n\n\n\nLevy is always ”on duty” with sketch book and paints at hand\, ever-ready to catch that line\, color\, light or moment – that even a camera could miss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGordon Jameson\n\n\n\nGordon Jameson is interested in the ongoing layering of life\, ideas\, history\, personal stories\, and mythologies. His visual conversation is like poetry\, a whispered interval between the past and tomorrow\, subtracting and adding\, losing one thing but gaining something new. His images\, while abstract\, reference specific places\, events\, memories\, moments in a day\, or a road taken. \n\n\n\nOn the process of painting\, Gordon says it “involves catharsis\, seeking a balance and finding a concrete language for an idea that may be very fleeting – like holding fog in a crystal bowl.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Serritella\n\n\n\nKnown world-wide for his dramatically realistic clay work\, Eric Serritella uncovers the beauty found in nature. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Eric served as an artist in residence at Starworks Center for Creative Enterprise in North Carolina\, exploring glass art. \n\n\n\nThis exhibit shows Eric’s expanding artistic repertoire that includes these beautiful pate de verre glass objects. He plays with a brilliant pallet of glass frits and pushes the material in new and exciting ways. Each piece is one-of-a-kind\, cast in a plaster mold that is never used again. \n\n\n\nEric has received many awards\, including the prestigious 2016 Distinguished Artist in Ceramics at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He has been featured in numerous American and international art publications and been highlighted in the New York Times Arts section. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLila Bacon\n\n\n\nPainter Lila Bacon is inspired by the visual\, and her interpretation of it. She describes space by placing emphasis on the world around an object\, rather than the object\, itself. \n\n\n\nShe says\, “whether\, I am painting a landscape\, figure\, or still life\, finding the pattern of the scene allows me to create an internal and external rhythm or breath in a piece.”  \n\n\n\nLila is an award winning artist who now lives in Carrboro\, North Carolina. She concentrates on floral painting. She graduated from Parsons School of Design / The New School in 1973. She worked with her husband in a flourishing pottery business\, then as proprietor of a wonderful American crafts gallery and website Sweetheart Gallery. She is the recipient of the Harriet Tannin award.

For guests attending in person\, a full bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres and light snacks will be provided by Alan Dehmer with nationally recognized guest chef Justin Burdett. \n How does it work? \n With the purchase of an Art Ticket\, your name is entered into a pool with other art ticket holders. Once called\, you’ll have one minute to choose your favorite piece of art “off the wall” to take home. It gets exciting as you never know what piece will go next! This year ‘s event will be hybrid\, meaning we’ll offer a limited amount of in-person art and companion tickets\, and some online virtual tickets! In-person guests will enjoy delicious food and an open bar. Online guests have the same chance to select art off the wall\, but from the comfort of their home. There are more than 70 pieces of donated art (from our generous artists!) all valued at more than the price of a ticket! We invite you to see all the artwork ahead time in two ways\, in-gallery or online. Visit the gallery the week before the Gala to see all the donated art hanging. Also\, preview the works below.                                                  How to access the Gala on Zoom ·  Go to https://zoom.us to download the Zoom app to your computer\, if you don’t have it already   ·  Once you have Zoom installed on your computer\, go to this URL https://ncsu.zoom.us/my/brandfortner (or click on the link on our website on the gala page) ·  You will then go to the waiting room where you will be let in for the event ·  Click on “Join with Video”  ·  Please orient yourself with the features and layout of Zoom\, and use “chat” to ask us questions during the event\, Feel free to call us at the gallery if you have questions before the event (would be best to call earlier in the day ) ·  We will ask you to mute yourself during the event and unmute when your name is called to call out the piece you have chosen. SUMMARY:FRANK Opening Reception & 2nd Friday
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Dan Gottlieb and Barbara Tyroler with Red Nucleus Band Performance. \n\n\n\nDan Gottlieb’s SWAMP features a suite of pictures inspired by explorations of eastern North Carolina’s hauntingly beautiful cypress swamps\, mill ponds\, and creeks – and their fragile ecologies. Dan combines his life decades as an artist\, museum designer\, and environmental activist using a laborious experimental process of his own design. \n\n\n\nGarden Journeys\, A Portrait Photographer Explores the Landscape showcases the work of professional photographer and educator\, Barbara Tyroler. Primarily an environmental portrait artist and editorial commercial photographer\, Barbara first began rendering the natural landscape while meandering through the local hiking trails with students\, friends\, and family during the early seasons of our Covid pandemic. The abstracted imagery emerged as shaggy and snarly forms\, colors\, and textures and blossomed into a broader appreciation for the complex interconnectedness and social networking at play. \n\n\n\nDaniel Johnston is a prominent North Carolina-based potter with a national presence who is widely celebrated for his remarkable craftsmanship in creating large-scale pottery. Through his skillful hands\, he transforms clay into stunning\, monumental vessels that not only serve as utilitarian pieces but also as captivating works of art. Daniel Johnston’s pottery stands as a testament to his enduring dedication to the craft and his ability to capture the essence of North Carolina’s pottery heritage on a grand scale. \n\n\n\n\n\nBarbara Tyroler\, Night Neighbors 2\, from The Garden Journey\, photograph

SUMMARY:iPhone Advanced Workshop with Bryce Lankard
DESCRIPTION:Contact: Bryce Lankard bryce@clickphotofest.org 917-204-8165 \n\n\n\nThe Omnipresent Camera\, an advanced Smartphone workshop. The new millennium has put a quality camera in nearly everyone’s pocket in the form of a smartphone. The camera phone and an application or two are powerful and creative tools. Students will learn a few tips and tricks that can make their creative voice sing with this little device. This workshop will review basic camera phone controls\, some filmmaking and photography tips and basic editing tips. We will also do a deeper dive into a couple of post-production applications\, like 8mm\, Hipstamatic and Instagram\, that can take images to the next level. Students should bring images previously taken and please bring your camera/phone and ideally your laptop to upload images. It is strongly recommended that students download other Photography editing applications (my preferred app is HIpstamatic). \n\n\n\nBryce Lankard has made images in the south as a documentary photographer for 35 years. He was a co-founder and creative director of Tribe Magazine\, co-founder of the New Orleans Photo Alliance\, co-founder / executive director of the Click! Photography Festival\, and an instructor at the Center for Documentary Studies. Exhibitions have featured work created with an iPhone. His current project\, Drawn to Water\, appeared in Southern Cultures. Bryce’s solo exhibition venues include Flanders Gallery in Raleigh\, NC and the Southeast Center for Photography in Greenville\, SC. His work was recently featured in Across County Lines\, Contemporary Photography from the Piedmont at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Sep/Nov 2023
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Barbara Tyroler\, Dan Gottlieb and guest artist Daniel Johnston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBarbara Tyroler\n\n\n\nBarbara Tyroler\, a multi-talented professional portrait photographer\, artist\, college-level educator\, and dedicated community advocate.  Her recent collection of tree photography exudes a captivating blend of technical prowess and artistic sensibility.  \n\n\n\nWith a keen eye for detail and a unique artistic perspective\, Barbara’s work transcends traditional photography\, transforming trees into mesmerizing subjects that evoke emotion and connection with the natural world. Her portfolio showcases a blend of creative portrait consignments\, one-on-one photo tutorials\, and small group workshops\, making her not only a skilled photographer but also a passionate educator who shares her expertise with others. Through her lens\, Barbara Tyroler invites us to appreciate the sublime elegance of trees and the power of visual storytelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan Gottlieb\n\n\n\nDan Gottlieb’s photography is a mesmerizing fusion of innovation and craftsmanship. His proprietary process\, a meticulously designed blend of non-traditional materials and painstaking effort\, breathes life into his images. By subjecting long camera exposures to a digital reversal and then printing them on clear acrylic panels\, Dan creates ethereal visuals that seem to transcend the boundaries of traditional photography. His dedication to achieving luminosity is evident through the application of foundational paint layers behind the image\, followed by meticulous hand-polishing with fine compounds. In his “SWAMP” series\, Dan draws inspiration from North Carolina’s evocative lowland ecosystems\, capturing their haunting beauty and fragility. This body of work\, stemming from his residency at The Peanut Factory in Edenton\, is a testament to Dan’s unique vision and artistic innovation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Johnston\n\n\n\nDaniel Johnston\, a prominent North Carolina-based potter with a national presence\, is celebrated for his remarkable craftsmanship in creating large-scale pottery. With a deep-rooted connection to the rich traditions of ceramics in his home state\, Daniel’s work transcends conventional boundaries. His creations are a testament to his mastery of form\, marrying functionality with artistic expression.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Aug/Sep 2023
DESCRIPTION:R. Scott Horner\n\n\n\nThese paintings embrace the chaos and regularity\, the calm entropy that pushes and pulls the world around us. By layering paint\, old events are covered up\, and sometimes rediscovered through transparency or scratch-throughs. The painting builds its own history\, allowing viewers to discover many stories within it. The work in this exhibit showcases Scott’s recent focus on the dynamics of rocks and stones. While he avoids direct representation\, the colors\, forms and other influences from the stony creek that runs through Scott’s backyard are apparent. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Filley\n\n\n\nSusan Filley is a highly acclaimed porcelain artist whose exceptional talent shines through her masterful creations. Renowned for her sumptuous glazes and impeccable craftsmanship\, each of Filley’s pieces exudes an ethereal beauty that captivates an audience. With an unwavering commitment to perfection\, she meticulously shapes her porcelain works into stunning forms that radiate elegance and sophistication. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaidy Lewis\n\n\n\nBritish artist Kaidy Lewis is a local talent whose extraordinary artwork seamlessly blends the abstract and the figurative\, resulting in a captivating visual narrative. Drawing inspiration from the nuances of daily life\, Lewis skillfully infuses her creations with a unique perspective that resonates with viewers on a deeply emotional level. Through her colors and form\, Lewis creates a vivid backdrop that serves as a canvas for female insights and experiences\, offering profound reflections on the art of living. With every stroke of her brush\, she invites us to delve into a realm where abstraction meets representation\, resulting in a body of work that is visually stunning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPolina Varlamova\n\n\n\nPolina Varlamova is FRANK’s emerging artist with a special feature in this exhibit. Her creative journey revolves around a profound reflection on her experience of emigration. Drawing from deeply personal archives and tracing her own metamorphosis\, she delves fearlessly into the history of her family\, unraveling the complexities of hybrid identities and the convergence of diverse cultures. With each stroke of creativity\, Polina Varlamova emerges as a captivating storyteller\, weaving together the strands of her heritage and the narrative of her present\, offering a glimpse into the profound and multifaceted nature of the human experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoe Grant\n\n\n\nFeatured guest artist and director of Starworks Glass\, Joe Grant\, is a visionary whose work is deeply inspired by the interplay of nature\, science\, and art. Through a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge techniques\, he brings his artistic visions to life\, elevating glass art to new heights. With an unyielding commitment to precision\, he continually pushes the boundaries of his craft\, delving into the minutiae of the natural realm\, capturing its essence with each delicate curve and vibrant hue. His profound connection with his art and skill shines through each of his pieces\, inviting all to revel in the mesmerizing magic he brings to life within each magnificent piece.
