SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Sep/Nov 2024
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Bill McAllister\, Susan Finer and guest artists Peg Gignoux and Karli Pendergraft. With a special exhibit curated by Joe Grant\, director of Starworks Glass and featuring the work of Takuro Shibata\, director of Starworks ceramics and Mac Metz\, director of Starworks metals. Also in this exhibit we’ll feature FRANK in Focus in association with the Triangle-Wide photography festival CLICK\, to celebrate the wonderful photographers of FRANK. \n\n\n\nOpening Reception September 27\, 6-9 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill McAllister\n\n\n\nIn Huangshan\, China\, Bill photographed the magic of that area’s natural wonders. His photos are presented in the manner of 8th century Chinese ink paintings depicting this most special place. Bill uses his expert eye in capturing the landscape\, always finding interesting textures\, engaging compositions and dreamy atmospherics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Finer\n\n\n\nFor Susan\, beauty is found in the imperfections of rough tree bark\, plush moss\, peeling paint and rusted metal. You can find this wondrous splendor in what she calls her “tactile memories.” Her intuitive abstract fiber art constructs a diverse terrain stitch by stitch\, knot by knot\, and layer by layer. She creates worlds where organic and linear\, chaotic and ordered come together\, where ragged rips\, untidy snippets\, and messy protrusions meet up with orderly lines and grids.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarli Pendergraft\n\n\n\nPendergraft has spent much of her life immersed in the natural world\, drawing inspiration from its intricate patterns and subtle energies. She uses clay to translate her observations into tangible forms. She draws inspiration from diverse natural phenomena such as mycelium networks\, branching root systems\, oceanic life\, and cellular structures. Her art gives you a space for reflection and wonder\, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the delicate and profound rhythms of nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoe Grant\n\n\n\nJoe is the Glass Director for Starworks. In his “Gossamers” series\, Joe blows the glass extremely thin\, stretching the colors until they begin to fall apart. Balanced between refined form and a loss of control\, these works celebrate the joys of color and the transformative qualities of glass to look and feel like fabric and textiles. Joe also collaborates with metalsmith Mac Metz to make abstracted glass flowers that transition carefully to the graceful lines of their stainless steel stems.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMac Metz\n\n\n\nDirector of the metal studio at Starworks\, Mac works primarily with metal\, stone\, glass and wood to create work that conveys allegorical references to past events and specific scientific principles. Looking at his work\, you see the push and pull of materials: soft wood next to cold steel and transparent glass paired with solid stone. His beautiful sculptures have been exhibited in Estonia\, Finland and Japan\, and we are very excited to see this work at FRANK. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTakuro Shibata\n\n\n\nSince becoming the director of Starworks Ceramics\, Takuro started researching local clays. His work beautifully presents the transformation of wild clay — untouched and raw\, with kilns fired with wood from local sawmills and the surrounding land. These magical ceramic pieces appear to grow and move\, echoing the capriciousness of the natural world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarguerite Jay Gignoux\n\n\n\nMarguerite’s stitched canvases hold small and large marks with layers of textile ink coloring lengths of linen. This sturdy cloth holds the history of her French-American family. Dropping in a few sweeping and crooked stitched lines suggests a setting; a garden\, a dwelling\, a path. These minimal shapes and washes of color invite you into Marguerite’s idyllic world.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Aug/Sep 2024
DESCRIPTION:Featuring member artists R. Scott Horner\, Kaidy Lewis and guest artists John Parkinson and Fabrizio Bianchi. \n\n\n\nOpening Reception: August 23 from 6-9 pmCoffee with FRANK live painting by Horner and Lewis: September 7 at 10 amSpecial Talk on ART and AI by Horner: September 18 at 6 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nR. Scott Horner\n\n\n\nScott’s paintings in this exhibit come from a series called Water on Stones. He captures the essence of the water/stone duality with exciting marks and shapes that delivers a pleasing presence. For Scott\, water creates and destroys. It also distorts our vision. In one glance we see a refracted view of what’s below and a reflection of what’s above. Stones record the flow of water and time. Each mark reports past events. Sharp edges and hard angles tell of quick\, violent actions. Round\, smooth areas show the erosion of centuries of moving water. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaidy Lewis\n\n\n\nKaidy presents us with complex compositions that hint at a human presence. In her new series of paintings\, the artist contemplates the increasing number of multiverses we are able to experience. The subjects of her semi-abstract paintings are both familiar and strange. You’ll notice inanimate objects as well as suggestions of people. In her work\, Kaidy uses bold and gestural marks that both subvert reality and describe it at the same time. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFabrizio Bianchi\n\n\n\nFabrizio’s work is his expression of what he calls a Venn diagram radiating from traversing ovals of duality. They represent his view of North and Latin American cultures\, digital and traditional art\, tranquility and chaos\, and precision and spontaneity. His tools include inks and wood burning which results in compositions that “cannot exist without the synchronous blend and clash of fire and water.” Look closely and you may see echos of cultures that shaped Fabrizio: graffiti in Buenos Aires\, Argentina; the imaginary landscapes of Italian futurists\, Chilean Surrealist Roberto Matta; and the timeless writings of Jorge Luis Borges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Parkinson\n\n\n\nThe wood furniture pieces John builds show clean elegant lines\, incorporating quiet details and accents that enhance visual vitality. He uses traditional hand tools and machinery to craft these beautiful and functional works of art. John says his “deepest satisfaction comes from designing a piece that both the owner and viewer find useful and interesting.”

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Jun/Aug 2024
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Donna Stubbs and her collaborative sculptures with Brent Arnold\, Theresa P-Tan and guest artists Sasha Bakaric and John Rosenthal. \n\n\n\nOpening reception is July 12. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonna Stubbs\n\n\n\nDonna is inspired by found objects\, bold color\, vintage books\, street photography\, winter trees\, and so much more. She intuitively explores contradictions and associations between abstract shapes\, collage\, mark-making and painting. A close examination of her work reveals many textured layers of acrylic paint\, drawing marks\, vintage paper\, fabric and her photography. These accumulated materials represent a part of her own history and give the viewer a deeper sense of discovery.  \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheresa P-Tan\n\n\n\nWe like the way Theresa’s work freely moves from one medium to another. You’ll see paint\, graphite\, colored pencil collage and more working together in harmony. Her playful explorations in this exhibit come from her recent experiences in the Galápagos Islands. The results are wonderful landscape-like compositions that give you the perfect sense of the remote\, natural and mysterious beauty found in those isles. For Theresa\, these works also carry memories of her family and the area of the world where her people are from. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSasha Bakaric\n\n\n\nSasha’s inspiration comes from microscopic images of various cells and microorganisms – the basis of all life. She says she is intrigued by the dichotomy between the beauty of these images and the fears that people often have when faced with viruses or bacteria. “I love the idea of questioning our relationship with the micro world inside and around us.” As you look at Sashas beautiful work\, you can image how each one is the result of a biological process where its images and forms spontaneously develop. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Rosenthal\n\n\n\nThe striking photography that John presents to us is both salutation and awe. He considers his landscape photographs to be salutations. “Camera in hand\, this is all I have to offer. The event before my eyes\, in its unboundedness\, is ultimately unknowable. It cannot be captured by a photograph\, but it can be saluted – the illusive stillness of its being.” To John\, the ocean is another matter. It is the Mother\, the Destroyer. To try to capture its power in a photograph is both absurd and tempting. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit May/Jun 2024
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception May 24 from 6-9 pm. There will also be a Second Friday reception on June 14. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Carroll Lassiter\, Peg Bachenheimer\, guest artists Deborah Harris\, Judith Ernst\, and Kathy Armacost. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarroll Lassiter\n\n\n\nMoving through the quiet areas of North Carolina\, Carroll looks for that perfect moment when light and landscape meet. She notes the three stages of her art process: \n\n\n\nFirst there is inspiration. A thrill or energy is generated by the angle of light\, a particular form\, a relationship of sky to ground. \n\n\n\nThen the work begins in capture. Reaching to recreate the specific moment of sensory excitement. \n\n\n\nAnd finally\, magic happens when that delight is transmitted to the viewer. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeg Bachenheimer\n\n\n\nPeg is an intuitive\, abstract painter inspired by nature\, memories\, life and her feelings. She explains\, “as I paint a memory or feeling emerges and becomes part of the process of building layers of color and texture. These memories are based on places I’ve been\, music I’ve heard\, people I’ve connected with and experiences I’ve had.” \n\n\n\nSometimes her work is abstract and sometimes landscape based. This series represents the emotional impact as she leaves her home of 37 years to find a new place and way to live. And\, some of the paintings are about her feelings of grief and growing acceptance of the recent loss of her sister\, Katharine. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeborah Harris\n\n\n\nThe whiteness of the clay body\, black sgraffito imagery\, along with the celadon glaze used by Deborah\, creates work reminiscent of the Cizhou kilns from the Song Dynasty of China. Deborah is inspired and motivated by the designs of this time period – as they express the natural world with insects and plants along with mythical creatures. \n\n\n\nDeborah believes hand crafted functional pottery serves an intimate connection between user and herself. Objects handled during everyday routines become familiar and comfortable. You have to see\, hold and use her works to truly enjoy their unique beauty. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJudith Ernst\n\n\n\nJudith’s work as a ceramist focuses on the interplay of traditional forms and sculptural expression. She uses the vessel form conceptually because it has an inner dimension surrounded by an outer surface that interacts with the outside world. \n\n\n\nShe plays with this dichotomy in the wonderfully complex and alluring pieces on display in this exhibit. She explains that a closed form is naturally extroverted. But her vessels\, with small openings to an interior\, suggest an introversion – with a mysterious inner space. \n\n\n\nThe changing angles of the various connecting planes of her work leads the eye to the inside of the vessel\, opening a dialogue between the vessel’s outer planes and inner spaces. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKathy Armacost\n\n\n\nKathy’s work is directed by nature\, history\, architecture\, dreams\, and everything else she comes in contact with. She explains\, “I don’t always know how a painting starts; sometimes an image or color\, texture\, music or even a scent will stay with me and push me toward a beginning. I like to bring to the work all the contradictions\, doubt and humor of the day.” \n\n\n\nHer goal is to keep the work alive. And the atmospheric mystery that surrounds you when you stand before her pieces will draw you in to that living world. \n\n\n\nMore Info & Work

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Apr/May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Carol Retsch Bogart\, Shelly Hehenberger\, Linda Prager\, and guest artists Doug Dotson and Jane Filer. \n\n\n\nWe’re holding a special closing reception for this show on May 10 from 6 pm -9 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol Retsch Bogart\n\n\n\nCarol’s love of collage and mixed media touches on all manner of materials. She’s experimented with textiles in recent years\, and for this show\, decided to dive deeper. In fact\, six of the nine pieces are textiles. \n\n\n\n“I am enthralled with textiles of other lands – from the silk kimonos of Japan to the cotton kantha cloth of India\,” Carol said. She adds her own silkscreened cloth to the mix. She continues\, “making marks\, shapes\, and images where none existed before forms a constant interplay between the materials and me.” \n\n\n\nA former therapist\, Carol has long been intrigued by the complicated nuances and layers of people’s lives\, feelings and experiences. For this show she explores the layers of texture in cloth – some observable and some hidden – just as in our lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShelly Hehenberger\n\n\n\nHeavily applied textured layers of oil paint and cold wax mixtures help Shelly express her concept of “Earth Time.” That is the passively infinite movement of time which directs the path of all life. \n\n\n\nShelly’s goal is to invite you to contemplate Earth Time as you might approach the textural bark of a tree\, or the persistent growth of stalactites in a cave\, or the complexity of an ocean reef. These natural forms and patterns grow and reform like the layered surfaces of her paintings in this exhibit. \n\n\n\nShelly explains\, “Through my work\, I hope to remind the viewer (as well as myself) of our birthright connection to the mysterious expanse of Earth Time and to allow it to teach us a deeper way to live and breathe in this world.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Prager\n\n\n\nLinda’s work is inspired by many things – architecture\, nature\, art in all its forms\, and\, the clay itself. \n\n\n\nThe pieces in this show express Linda’s reaction to the works of the other exhibiting artists. She explains\, “I became excited thinking about how I could create work that would talk to\, and connect with\, their work.” Linda went with bolder\, brighter color combinations for many of these piece\, while some express softer\, more muted colors to provide some quiet focus for the eyes\, and to reflect Linda’s quieter thoughts. \n\n\n\nAs you look at Linda’s work\, think about the layers of color and texture\, and consider how that relates to the object’s form. These pieces are sculptural and beautiful\, but they’re also functional vessels created for everyday use. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJane Filer\n\n\n\nIn Jane’s work\, you are transported to worlds of wonder and supernatural experiences. These colorful paintings tell stories rooted in what it means to be human. \n\n\n\nJane has made homes in North Carolina — at the beach and in the woods. She spends time in New Mexico and the Florida Keys. In her works\, those environments are depicted in ethereal ways. She explains that her paintings\, “are vehicles. They are equations and visual stories. They are teleportation beams\, if you dare to take the ride. They are my offspring. They are what I have spent my life nurturing and putting out in the world.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoug Dotson\n\n\n\nDoug creates pottery for daily use\, looking to the simplicity and strength of natural forms for inspiration. He makes pots\, “in a way that shows the marks of my hands\, the tools I use\, and the fire that transforms mud into pottery. I want the hardy\, rustic feel and appearance of my pottery to be as grounding to the pot’s eventual owner as it is to me when I make it.”

SUMMARY:Landscape Art: Abstract vs Representational
DESCRIPTION:This invite-only event is not open to the general public. If you want to attend\, please consider supporting FRANK by joining our Friends of FRANK Membership Program. Your support helps FRANK achieve its community education and outreach goals. \n\n\n\nFRANK Gallery artists\, Carroll Lassiter and R. Scott Horner\, will talk about their work and give you insights into their processes. Carroll’s representational landscape paintings aim to faithfully represent the natural world\, while Scott’s abstract paintings convey emotions\, impressions\, or ideas about the landscape through non-literal means. \n\n\n\nIs one way better than the other? Well\, you may not get the answer to that question\, but you will come away with a fuller understanding of these two approaches to landscape painting.
