SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit August-September 2025
DESCRIPTION:The gallery is featuring the work of member artists Shelly Hehenberger\, Karen Day\, Natalie Boorman\, Mary Lee Kerr and guest artist Alan Dehmer. \n\n\n\nOpening Reception on August 22\, 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlan Dehmer\n\n\n\nAlan Dehmer’s work uses the gum bichromate printing process. Embracing both photography and printmaking this process leverages image making as time transforms layers of each piece. The end work carries an archetypal quality\, like something from an old memory or a dream one can’t quite remember. \n\n\n\nAlan Dehmer is a founding member of the FRANK Gallery\, a published author\, and a guest lecturer at NC State University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaren Day\n\n\n\nMuch of Karen’s work is rooted in a kind of personal excavation – visual and emotional. She thinks of her paintings as artifacts of an interior world\, shaped by her dreamings of time and memory. Instead of something static or sealed\, she imagines reliquaries in motion: shifting forms dissolving\, evolving and reforming. \n\n\n\nShe builds layers of texture early on\, then continues adding – sometimes scraping or masking areas to create visual moments of clarity\, opacity\, and depth. Her interest is in what is revealed\, what remains hidden\, and how meaning can live in the spaces between. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Lee Kerr\n\n\n\nFor 40 years\, Mary Lee Kerr has studied and created clay sculptures\, gradually mastering the technical aspects of the medium and constantly searching for the best way to express her ideas.  \n\n\n\nRecently her larger work has focused on protection–of herself\, her family and her community–and warding off the dangers of a threatening world. These figures are protected by shells\, spines and claws\, or hold talismans to ward off evil. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNatalie Boorman\n\n\n\nNatalie Boorman has worked with clay for the past 40 years.  Using the “Pinch Pot” method is meditative for her\, allowing her to relax with the clay\, interact with it\, forming a relationship which is not always consciously developed.  \n\n\n\nHer finishing process includes burnishing\, bisque firing the vessels in an electric kiln and then either fire them in a pit or a raku kiln\, both variations of what’s known as smoke firing.  Smoke firings are unpredictable\, spontaneous and intriguing. Not for anyone needing a sense of control! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShelly Hehenberger\n\n\n\nShelly’s recent work is inspired by the quiet but always industrious processes of regeneration at work in the earth around and below our feet. Sometimes slowly\, sometimes with remarkable speed\, forces break apart one form of life to make another\, like a child assembling her blocks to build a form that is at once demolished to make another\, and another. Her art process reflects this means of invention as her surfaces are composed of elements carved from other compositions and then reconstructed\, creating a snapshot of life mid-leap from one embodiment to the next.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit July-August 2025
DESCRIPTION:The gallery is featuring the work of member artist R. Scott Horner\, emerging artist in residence Lucas Bernard\, and guest artists Chris Boerner\, Paul Reamey\, and Kerry Schroeder. \n\n\n\nThe gallery also features a group landscape show\, “SCAPES”. \n\n\n\nOpening Reception on July 11\, 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLucas Bernard\n\n\n\nAs an oil painter\, Lucas’ motivation to create stems from a desire to engage more intimately with the world around him. By spending hours closely observing an object\, person\, plant\, or landscape\, Lucas is able to build a personal connection to both his subject and the physical art he creates. Through this process\, Lucas aims to highlight aspects of life that may seem insignificant or overlooked\, inviting a deeper appreciation of the mundane. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Boerner\n\n\n\nChris Boerner is an artistic woodturner\, specializing in creating beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork from a variety of rare and unusual wood. Basically self-taught\, Chris enjoys creating intricately and technically advanced artistic pieces. He searches for unusual wood from downed trees with dynamic color and grain which may have burls\, holes\, or bark inclusions. Though these characteristics add to the difficulty and danger turning the wood\, it increases Chris’ excitement and determination to create a piece that is truly unique. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nR. Scott Horner\n\n\n\nIn this exhibit\, Scott is visualizing the many echos of self found in the things we create and the enduring actions that leave behind traces of our being. Our selves echo in the digital world\, too. Giant data centers build virtual selves by assembling our online activities. Through repetition of key shapes\, and creation of container-like forms\, Scott explores the concept of self-related artifacts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Reamey\n\n\n\nPaul is an artist and industrial designer currently working in glass\, wood\, and stone. He’s drawn to these materials both by the puzzle of joining them together and by a simple fascination of how they continue to interact in a finished piece. There’s something about the fragility of cold glass\, the heaviness of stone and the soft\, approachable nature of wood that makes coupling these materials particularly compelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKerry Schroeder\n\n\n\nKerry Schroeder’s work is a metaphor for the search for answers in a world where they feel both close at hand and impossibly distant. She turns to nature as her visual language—layered\, ever-changing\, and complex\, much like life itself. She considers her work expressionistic\, blending gestural brushstrokes and spontaneous marks with representational forms\, existing in the space between the tangible and the abstract. Her process is a constant push and pull—allowing what wants to emerge\, working with what appears\, and letting go of what doesn’t belong.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit May-July 2025
DESCRIPTION:The gallery is featuring the work of member artists Carol Retsch-Bogart\, Nerys Levy\, Linda Prager\, and guest artists Leif Gann-Matzen and Pete Sack. \n\n\n\nOpening Reception on May 23\, 2025. \n\n\n\nThis show will also be the spotlight of a special event\, The Artistic Palate: A Fusion of Art\, Food\, Poetry & Song\, on June 1\, 2025! Tickets are available now! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol Retsch-Bogart\n\n\n\nA recent visit to Japan has inspired Carol’s encaustic wax\, mixed media and printmaking work. She reacts to Japanese woodblock prints\, graphic illustrations\, amazing textiles of indigo\, and floral silks. Carol’s own work is bold and colorful with a strong connection to nature and an emphasis on the simplicity and beauty of ordinary objects. \n\n\n\nMore Info and Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNerys Levy\n\n\n\nNerys’ work is inspired by her summer travel sketches in Great Britain and northern Italy. She then captures the energy of those sketches in paintings with bold lines and strong colors. The works in this exhibit show how\, with simplicity of form and line\, Nerys effortlessly conveys the mood and dimensionality of place. \n\n\n\nMore Info and Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Prager\n\n\n\nReacting to complexity in the world\, Linda presents us rounded\, simplified clay forms that bring a sense of quiet. These pieces abstractly speak of trees\, sky\, and birds. It is definitely Linda’s most painterly series of work. The painted surfaces show her expressive brushstrokes as color layers with color. \n\n\n\nMore Info and Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeif Gann-Matzen\n\n\n\nLeif carves wooden sculptures from trees felled a stone’s throw from the Eno River. In the process of carving\, he works not to impose but to follow. The long\, flowing forms of Leif’s pieces present his memories of tree and river in solid beauty. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Leif and view recent works on his website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPete Sack\n\n\n\nThis is the first time these pieces by Pete have hung together on exhibit. They represent his figurative and abstract works expressing both an internal reflection of personal experiences and external observations of the ways in which we engage with others. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Pete and view recent works on his website.

SUMMARY:Coffee with FRANK - Photographing Artwork
DESCRIPTION:Budget-friendly ways to photograph your artby R. Scott HornerFree | Coffee & Donuts Provided \n\n\n\nThe painting is finished\, but now you have to post it to Instagram and your website\, or maybe send it off to be jurried\, or maybe you need to document your collection. So you have to take a photo. \n\n\n\nOf course\, the best way to document your work is to hire a photographer with the right equipment – cameras\, lenses\, lighting etc. But for many of us\, we don’t have the resources to do that. In this coffee talk\, painter R. Scott Horner will cover budget-friendly ways you can photograph your artwork. \n\n\n\nAfter years of trying to get good photos of his work\, Scott has developed a method that is mostly color correct\, well lit\, and high resolution. Scott will show you how to use your cell phone and free software to get the job done. He will talk mostly about photographing paintings\, but will also share tips on photographing three-dimentional artwork. \n\n\n\nJoin us for our monthly Coffee with FRANK series that invites you to slow down\, sip a warm cup of coffee\, and engage with the creative community at FRANK Gallery! \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a longtime collector\, a fellow artist\, or someone simply curious about the creative process\, Coffee with FRANK provides a welcoming space to explore ideas\, build community\, and spark meaningful conversations. SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Apr/May 2025
DESCRIPTION:The gallery is featuring the work of photographers Peter Filene and Dan Gottlieb\, and woodworker Keith Allen.  \n\nOpening Reception on April 11. \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPeter Filene\n\nIn this vibrant series\, Peter grapples with personal identities behind portraiture. He asks\, “what is a portrait?” For the past two years\, Peter has been collaging torn pieces of his previous photos to create new images. Does a photograph of a woman\, set against a collaged background\, portray her? When you look at Peter’s almost-abstract figures\, do you see portraits? \n\n\n \n\n\nDan Gottlieb\n\nThe dream-like landscapes in Dan’s exhibit touch upon important places in his life. They share his aesthetic perspective of nature and our fleeting place within it – moving with light\, wind\, and breath. More gestural than documentary\, Dan’s pictures reside in that gap between information and subjective perception.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKeith Allen\n\nKeith’s wood furniture often features natural aspects of the material. His designs may be motivated by the material itself\, or by the language found in songs\, or everyday phrases. His intuitive way of understanding relationships and details helps his pieces evolve into something new and unique.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Jean Michel Dissake
DESCRIPTION:Sculptural Works\n\n\n\nSpecial exhibition lecture and short-film viewing on March 13 > LEARN MORE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCameroonian artist Jean Michel Dissake’s sculptural works use found and recycled materials to represent a balance between nature and technology by weaving natural objects such as wood\, vines\, termite dust\, water hyacinths\, and palm fronds together with computer boards\, aluminum wire\, license plates\, and car parts. These objects that embody energy from people around the world are sewn together with wire to celebrate diversity\, restore souls and bring unity. \n\n\n\nInformed by his cultural heritage as well as wisdom gained from living for nine years in a forest on the Mungo River\, Dissake’s work invokes a dialogue on ecological and spiritual matters and speaks to timely issues of unity\, love\, and oneness with nature. Dissake asserts that “everything is linked” and seeks\, through his art\, to heal the Tree of Life. \n\n\n\nThese works are selections from a recent exhibit at the Gregg Museum of Art and Design called BABENGA: The Sacred Forest. The Gregg exhibit was co-curated by Marriott Sheldon\, a Raleigh artist and guest artist at FRANK Gallery\, and Roger Manley\, former director of the Gregg Museum. \n\n\n\nBabenga refers both to the village where Dissake’s grandfather was the local king for over fifty years as well as the idea of the continuity of humans – a ceremonial invocation of a future land and new spirituality where humans and nature thrive. Dissake’s understanding and deep respect for the natural world imbue the works with symbolism that serves as a wakeup call to realize our interdependence with nature. \n\n\n\nDissake is recognized as a visionary artist\, philosopher and activist. He recently represented Cameroon with works exhibited in the 2024 Venice Biennale\, the world’s most prestigious art exposition. Jean Michel Dissake’s works were exhibited at the 2024 Dakar Biennale and included in many exhibitions in Europe. It is an honor to exhibit and offer Dissake’s works for sale here at FRANK Gallery\, considering he is on the verge of becoming very well known internationally. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFROM THE EXHIBITION

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit Feb/Mar 2025
DESCRIPTION:The gallery is featuring member artists Luna Lee Ray and Peg Bachenheimer\, and guest artists Karli Pendergraft and William Moore. \n\n\n\nAlso on exhibit is a special selection of works by Cameroon artist Jean Michel Dissake. \n\n\n\nOpening reception is on Feb. 21 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuna Lee Ray\n\n\n\nTake a close look at the deep complexity of Luna’s layered mixed media surfaces. Then step back and let the mood and mystery of these abstract works reveal a truth in nature that cannot be conveyed through realism. Luna is inspired by the forms and processes of the natural world: cells and pods and clouds\, wind and light and mist and rain. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeg Bachenheimer\n\n\n\nAn intuitive painter\, Peg starts thinking about color and feeling. She brings back memories of places she’s been\, music she hears\, and her experiences of place – especially in nature. The rich and vibrant applications of encaustic paint in Peg’s exhibited work explores the lush beauty of the garden. A colorful reminder that spring is on its way. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarli Pendergraft\n\n\n\nKarli’s organic sculptures seem to reach out and return on themselves — showing the interconnectedness of life\, from the unseen networks beneath the earth to the vast\, ever-changing rivers and oceans. The recent hurricane that devastated western North Carolina\, where Karli lives and works\, impacted all aspects of her world. It was a stark reminder of the power and fragility of nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWilliam Moore\n\n\n\nThese wonderful works by William show how he pushes his materials of clay\, glass and metals to their extreme. The resulting colors and textures are sublime. Shown internationally\, William Moore’s work graces private and public collections\, which locally include Duke University Chapel\, Progress Energy headquarters\, SAS Corporation\, Glaxco Wellcome and the City Cary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean Michel Dissake\n\n\n\nCameroonian artist Jean Michel Dissake’s sculptural works use found and recycled materials to represent a balance between nature and technology. He recently participated in this year’s Venice Biennale\, the world’s most prestigious art expo. It’s an honor to have Dissake’s work available here at FRANK Gallery\, considering he is on the verge of becoming very well known internationally. \n\n\n\n> LEARN MORE
