SUMMARY:Off the Wall Fundraising Gala
DESCRIPTION:FRANK’s signature fundraising event is well-known for its excitement\, spectacular selection of art\, and community roots. Join us in our 12th year as we support FRANK Gallery’s mission to enrich our community through art. \nWhen is the Gala? Saturday\, October 8th\, 2022 at 6 p.m. Eastern for Zoom and no later than 5:15pm for in person \nHow does it work? With the purchase of an Art Ticket\, the ticket holder’s name is entered into a pool with other art ticket holders at the beginning of the night. When the drawing starts\, the names of art ticket holders will be drawn at random (this is the fun part!) and read out loud by our emcee\, local radio personality\, Aaron Keck. Once your name is called\, you’ll have one minute to choose your favorite piece of art “off the wall” to take home. It gets exciting as you never know what the next piece to go will be! This year we will be hosting the event hybrid\, meaning we will be offering a limited amount of art and companion tickets for guests to attend in person! The in person guests will enjoy catered dinner from the exquisitely talented Alan Dehmer as well as able to partake in an open bar. \nThere will be over 70 pieces of donated art (from our generous artists!) all valued at more than the price of a ticket! We invite you to see all the artwork ahead time in two ways\, in-gallery or online. Visit the gallery the week before the event to see all the donated art hanging and soon we’ll start adding previews of donated art on our website\, updated with new art as we receive it — so check back often! \nWhere? The Gala will be held at the gallery and be live broadcast via Zoom for attendees who want to enjoy art and gourmet food in the comfort and safety of their home.  \nHow much are tickets? Tickets for virtual attendance are $395 for two people for one piece of art. Prices for art ticket holders in-person will be $450 and an additional $75 for a companion. Each in-person art ticket and companion ticket will receive one piece of art\, and will partake in a catered dinner. \nWe would love if you could join us from anywhere in the country and are happy to ship you the piece of art you win at an additional cost.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Featured artists exhibit for September-November
DESCRIPTION:Featuring member artists Nerys Levy\, Carroll Lassiter\, and guest artists Patricia Saling and John Parkinson\nOpening Reception October 14th 5-7pm \n*PLEASE NOTE THE POSTPONED DATE BECAUSE OF IMPENDING WEATHER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile also being stunning depictions of the natural world\, Nerys Levy’s featured work is focusing on two major issues confronting planet Earth right now\, climate change and the COVID 19 pandemic. Nerys Levy is a plein air artist\, traveling all around the world to capture the essence of the world we live in\, in her unique and beautiful style. Her works in this exhibit on the Arctic and Antarctic are based on sketches she made there when visiting those Polar regions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarroll Lassiter is a plein air artist capturing the incredible views we have in our backyard here in North Carolina with her oil paints. Carrroll’s attention to detail is meticulous\, capturing the light and spirit of the place she is painting. Each of Carroll’s paintings transport the viewer to a familiar place or familiar feeling wrapping each viewer in the warmth of the light she captures. Adding to her exquisite pieces are her hand-forged custom steel frames on each one of her paintings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPatricia Saling is a guest artist for this show\, but she has been a wonderful asset to the gallery for years. Patricia is continually experimenting with clay and glazes and glaze application making each new collection of her work intriguing and exciting. Making functional vessels is often the core of her pottery making\, allowing each hand picking up and using her pottery\, another part of the history of the ceramic pieces. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Parkinson is an incredibly talented woodworker and furniture maker. With a remarkable eye for detail and design\, John creates pieces that are functional and enhance one’s home. Mixing a design esthetic of contemporary design and craftsmanship with techniques of Danish cord weaving John creates a unique style of his own design with his stunning one of a kind pieces.

SUMMARY:Featured artists exhibit for Aug/Sep 2022
DESCRIPTION:Featuring member artists Austin Cathey and Donna Stubbs\, and guest artists Thoryn Ziemba and John Cummings \nOpening Reception August 12th 5-7pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonna Stubbs\nDonna Stubbs is both a featured and member artist of FRANK. Her choices of mixed media such as acrylic paint\, vintage books\, photography\, cut scraps of clothing\, and tissue paper act as the protagonists in her pieces allowing the viewer to get immersed in the story she is telling. As the artist herself so eloquently states\, “Working with abstraction allows me to intuitively play with imagery\, texture and mark-making. Whimsical characters\, text and suggestive forms often appear in the chaos of paint and line. A sense of place and time develops. A loud and quiet conversation take place\, until a stillness is found. This evolution is central to balancing my art and how I know when the piece is completed.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAustin Cathey\nAustin Cathey is both a member artist and featured artist for the months of August and September. Austin was the inaugural candidate for FRANK’s Emerging Artist Program and has since graduated with his MFA and developing his artistic talents in really exciting and innovative directions. Austin experiments with mixed media techniques on hanging large pieces of thick paper. The artists tests the limits of his media by adding layers and layers of different elements which brings to the forefront the organic and fragile nature of the paper with intentional and exciting results. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Cummings\nShowing his incredible pieces at the gallery for the first time\, we are thrilled to have the work of ceramic artist\, John Cummings in this featured show. Based out of Asheville\, John creates both small and very large ceramic vessels which are a testament to his mastery of his ceramic medium. Calling the surface decorations of his pieces “abstract expressionism”\, John uses different tools\, firing methods\, and glazing techniques to create his pieces. Constantly experimenting and exploring clay\, John’s work so beautifully tells a story of his relationship to the clay in forming the individual pieces. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoryn Ziemba\nShowcasing his stunning glass pieces for the first time in the gallery FRANK is proud to be exhibiting the artistry of Thoryn Ziemba. Stating of his highly creative and exquisitely made pieces\, “My method for doing this is by using a constructive technique with glass whereby I blend architectural references and the form of graffiti you may find on those same buildings to evoke the sense of humanity both display.”

SUMMARY:Featured artists exhibit for June/July 2022
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Luna Lee Ray\, Shelly Hehenberger\, William Moore and Natalie Boorman \n\n\n\n\n\nLuna Lee Ray\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking with both “randomness and intentionality\,” mixed media and member artist Luna Lee Ray’s pieces are each delicately and precisely layered\, in which she creates supremely ethereal and exquisite works inspired by the interplay of nature. In her own words; “The early stages of a piece involve active drawing\, sometimes with my eyes closed. I then add multiple layers of thin and thick paints\, adding more graphite between layers. As a piece moves on I will begin to add more complex forms and fine tune the color harmonics. As I layer\, some elements are enhanced and some are obscured\, resulting in an atmospheric surface rich with history\, depth\, and luminosity.” \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShelly Hehenberger\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn an expertly skilled and unique technique\, member artist Shelly Hehenberger masters her medium of oil and cold wax to create highly layered and textured pieces through a process that is months in the making.  Directly inspired by the natural world\, Shelly pieces are a stunning interpretation of how she views the ever-changing elements and movement of nature. Using a variety of tools\, Shelly layers\, carves\, adds and subtracts with cold wax which\, “reflects a sense of the creative tension existing between the constructive and deconstructive energies in nature\, and is the essence of my process.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWilliam Moore\nGuest artist and sculptor\, William Moore works in a variety of sculptural elements\, including marble\, ceramic\, stone\, wood\, and bronze to create imaginative and skillful works of art. “His blend of an obviously crisp\, intimate familiarity with human form into impossible contortions of angular\, stolid materials\, mimics the natural forces Earth spent creating the elements.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNatalie Boorman\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMember and ceramic artist\, Natalie Boorman hand builds each one of her vessels through the pinch pot technique of which the artist states\, “Using this method is meditative\, allowing me to relax with the clay\, interact with it\, forming a relationship which is not always consciously developed.” After creating her beautifully and organically formed pieces\, Natalie uses smoke firing methods\, either in a pit or raku kiln. The end result of the firing allows for the smoke to imprint on the vessels creating a delicate image and story of the items fired with the pieces\, such as horse hair\, ferns\, or wire to name a few.

SUMMARY:Featured artists exhibit for April/May 2022
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Bill McAllister\, Peter Filene\, Tim Walter\, Ivana Milojevic Beck\, and Julio de Alberdi\nOPENING RECEPTION APRIL 8 FROM 5-7PM AT THE GALLERY\nWelcome Spring with this exhibit featuring member artists Bill McAllister and Peter Filene\, and guest artists Tim Walter\, Ivana Milojevic Beck\, and Julio de Alberdi. Join us at the gallery for the opening reception on April 8. \n  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill McAllister\nMember artist and incredibly accomplished photographer\, Bill McAllister will be featuring his wonderful photography—”Whether the photograph is a created imagination\, portrait or figure study; the permission and participation of those people photographed hopefully allows for an image that celebrates them.” Also stating; “Process is often integral. Whether using the ultra large format 20×24 inch Polaroid\, homemade\, infrared modified\, or underwater cameras\, each affect the path of image creation. Most force me to work with in a slower\, more deliberate manner\, helping to see past the readily apparent.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Filene\nConstantly adding to his repertoire of accomplishments\, Peter is a member artist of FRANK and highly creative photographer who is always re-inventing his medium. The body of work Peter will be exhibiting in this show will be his photocollages. Peter’s collages are dynamic\, painterly\, and abstract\, and a really beautiful way of melding his different types of photography into a creative representation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured artist and member of FRANK\, Peter Filene talks about his latest artwork in the gallery\, photocollages. Drawing from a desire to delve into a new creative form\, Peter literally rips apart his own double-exposure photographs to create something new and exciting during this featured exhibit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTim Walter\n\n\n\nFRANK is showing selections from Tim Walter’s series Portraits [Trauma]. These images give visual expression to internal emotions of the subjects’ experience of trauma in their lives\, emotions such as fear\, anger\, resignation\, and sometimes resolve and love. The large-scale photos straddle art and documentary. To create the pictures\, he works with the subjects over four to eight hours\, encouraging them to enter a state of flow so that imagery emerges at times from the unconscious. Tim is also an arts entrepreneur and advocate; he founded and runs The Fruit\, a multi-dimensional art and performance venue in downtown Durham. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIvana Milojevic Beck\n\n\n\nThe tension between Ivana’s Serbian and American identities is at the center of her struggle to mold a present existence into a future resolution between two disparate worlds\, she says. “My focus is on generation of women in my family\, my grandmother\, my mother\, my daughter and me. I work to portray the resilience\, flexibility\, and adaptability that has been passed down the line. I imagine female form\, strong and balanced\, resting as the foundational material for generations to come. I find parallels between structural\, foundational home building and women’s physical and mental power as mother\, wife\, and daughter. Materials that I continue to use – brick\, wax and mortar – remind me that what is strong and durable can also be vulnerable and ephemeral.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulio de Alberdi\n\n\n\nShowcasing for the first time at FRANK\, Julio was born in London\, raised in Spain\, and now currently living in Pittsboro. “While growing up in Spain and England\, Julio worked for and assisted his father Joxe Alberdi\, making large sculpture commissions for city centers\, banks and private collections.” Julio’s sculptures are made up of wood\, soap stone and mixed media and we are thrilled to showcase his work in this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Featured artists exhibit for February/March 2022
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Carol Retsch-Bogart\, Linda Prager\, Brent Arnold \, Pearl Arnold and Marilyn Palsha\nOPENING RECEPTION FEBRUARY 11TH FROM 5-7PM\nWe close out winter with this exhibit featuring member artists Carol Retsch-Bogart and Linda Prager\, and guest artists Brent Arnold\, Pearl Arnold and Marilyn Palsha. Join us at the gallery for the opening reception on February 11. \nCarol Retsch-Bogart\nMember artist\, Carol Retsch-Bogart is a highly skilled mixed media artist\, constantly challenging herself and how she approaches her medium. Melding her past experiences as a psychotherapist with being an artist further enhances her work and amplifies her ability to tell a story through textures and layers. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Prager\n\n\n\nA multi-talented artist and member of the gallery\, Linda Prager will have her newest ceramic pieces featured. These hand-built and textured pieces have a beautiful\, graphic quality. Using all sorts of methods and tools in order to create surface texture\, Linda creates dynamic functional pieces allowing the viewer “to touch\, to look more closely\, to explore.” \n\n\n\nMarilyn Palsha\n\n\n\nAfter decades of making pots\, Marilyn Palsha turned her focus to making figurative sculpture for the last ten years. These female figures express the challenges of aging\, illness\, facing fear\, finding courage and finding peace. It is her hope that viewers will see their own narratives. The work is fired twice and designed to be enjoyed indoors. \n\n\n\nBrent Arnold\n\n\n\nAn encaustic artist with his first featured show at FRANK\, we are excited to have his pieces in this show. Brent creates a industrial vibe and rich luscious textures with his medium: \n\n\n\n“Encaustic feels like putting on a perfectly worn pair of shoes\, everything about it feels right.  All of my thoughts and intentions are enhanced by the medium.” \n\n\n\n“I realize now all of my work lies in-between two histories.  My intent is to freeze a conversation and let the negative space between be the experience.” \n\n\n\nPearl Arnold\n\n\n\nDesigner and artist\, Pearl Arnold is also featured for the first time in the upcoming exhibit. Working with a balance between structure and looseness\, in soft muted palettes\, Pearl draws her viewer in as they get lost in the wondery of her pieces.

SUMMARY:John Rosenthal Reading on Dec. 12
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in the gallery for a reading by photographer and author John Rosenthal on December 12th from 2-3pm. John will be talking about and reading from his highly praised recently published book Searching for Amylu Danzer.  There will be limited seating and admittance so please RSVP through the form below. Vaccination cards and masks will be required. \n  \nPraise for Searching for Amylu Danzer:\n “Friend or lover in your youth\, the ‘one that got away’  always takes a part of your heart along…for the feelings of youth are greater than we will ever know again…they swallow the earth.  Ever the image man\, John Rosenthal offers us an indelible portrait in Searching for Amylu Danzer of such a friend\, such a time\, such a loss.—LEE SMITH\, author of Family Linen and Fair and Tender Ladies: \n “Relying on his memory of a dear friend\, John Rosenthal has composed a once-in-a-lifetime reading experience. Searching for Amylu Danzer is funny; direct; and tantalizingly oblique; Rosenthal’s dramatic study of his relationship with Amylu–and with his memory of her–is smooth\, clear; and suspenseful. He masterfully shuffles time and event while weaving together photographic art\, memoir\, and novelistic technique. This book will knock you down in the way great books are supposed to knock you down. Skip it only if you’ve never lost someone you loved.”—CLYDE EDGERTON\, author of Walking Across Egypt and The Floatplane Notebooks

SUMMARY:2021 Off the Wall Fundraising Gala
DESCRIPTION:FRANK’S SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING EVENT IS WELL-KNOWN FOR ITS EXCITEMENT\, SPECTACULAR SELECTION OF ART\, AND COMMUNITY ROOTS. JOIN US IN OUR 11TH YEAR AS WE SUPPORT FRANK GALLERY’S MISSION TO ENRICH OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH ART. \nHow does it work? With the purchase of an Art Ticket\, the ticket holder’s name is entered into a pool with other art ticket holders at the beginning of the night. When the drawing starts\, the names of art ticket holders will be drawn at random (this is the fun part!) and read out loud by our emcee\, local radio personality\, Aaron Keck. Once your name is called\, you’ll have one minute to choose your favorite piece of art “off the wall” to take home. It gets exciting as you never know what the next piece to go will be! \nYou are also invited to visit the gallery the week before the event to see all the donated art in person and we will be sending out an artwork list prior to the event so everyone can make a list of your favorite art\, in order of preference.  \nThere will be over 70 pieces of donated art (from our generous artists!) all valued at more than the price of a ticket and will be posted on our website prior to the event\, so stay tuned and check back often to get an early look. \nWhere? The Gala will be live broadcast via Zoom from the Gallery to your home where you can enjoy art and gourmet food in the comfort and safety of home.  \nHow much are tickets? Tickets for virtual attendance are $395 for two people for one piece of art.  \nWe would love if you could join us from anywhere in the country and are happy to ship you the piece of art you win at an additional cost.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit for September/November 2021
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Carolyn Rugen\, Kaidy Lewis and Tinka Jordy \nVIRTUAL RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK: FRIDAY\, OCTOBER 22 6-7 PM \nThe gallery is excited to feature the paintings of members\, Kaidy Lewis and Carolyn Rugen and sculptural work of guest artist\, Tinka Jordy. \n\n\n\nCarolyn Rugen\nAll of my work is grounded in my perceptions of the natural world – it is about seeing and feeling deeply about what is seen.  This work is perhaps the most autobiographical of any of my work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nI was born on a small farm in rural Tennessee.  My earliest memories are of the open comforting fields\, and sky\, dense woods\, and the animals\, always the animals.  And I was able to fulfill many a young girls dream\, that of having her own horse and riding frequently.   \nThen came college\, marriage\, three children\, an advanced degree in library science\, the study of art history\, a museum internship and finally the serious work of trying to make art. And most of this time I lived in cities. \nAbout thirty years ago my husband and I built a house in Chapel Hill and I was delighted\, after a short drive out into the country\, to find myself surrounded by the same gentle landscape that I had grown up with.  Out on Mt. Carmel Church Rd. I came upon a field of beautiful horses and after a chat with the farmer I was able to sit on the edge of the pasture and draw.  And a few years later my oldest daughter and I spent a magical three days at the Cataloochee Ranch  in Maggie Valley\, NC with and riding the horses.  \nAnd here are these paintings.   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaidy Lewis\n‘I began these paintings with the expectation that we were emerging from Covid-19. This exceptional time is hybrid. It is collectively new and yet the same as the time before. This is what I examine when I paint. In the process my intention(consciousness) dances with my unconscious. Often offering me up a way to understand my experience of the world a little ( sometimes to my own surprise). I paint in all orientations of a 2D canvas as there are no sides in a round world. \nAs I apply paint I am trying to understand world dynamics\, patterns\, distortions\, humor\, truth beauty and essence. I glimpse at several realities often saying the same. \nWhen I emerge from painting\, I check that every inch of the canvas sings\, whether it be in the narrative\, design or paint. They are made to be generous for years to come’. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTinka Jordy\nThe surfaces of my sculptures are full of surface cracks\, fissures and imperfections that express the earth\, the passing of time\, our mortality\, vulnerability\, and the search for spirituality and acceptance. I work on them until they look back at me.  \nAlthough the viewer is not there during the actual creation of this work\, it’s my intention that the final piece will draw the viewer in to participate in the sensuality of the work\, and that their perceptions will be questioned\, while their emotions are evoked\, through my use of the clay in its final form\, scale and texture.  \nFor over 40 years I have worked in clay as it is the one material that\, if I listen closely\, communicates these sentiments so beautifully.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit for August/September 2021
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Gordon Jameson\, Joe Grant and Michele Maynard \nOPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY\, AUGUST 20TH FROM 6-8PM \nPlease visit us in August and September to see the newest exhibit at FRANK featuring artists Gordon Jameson\, Joe Grant and Michele Maynard. Join us in-person for the opening reception at the gallery on August 20th (masks required). \n  \n\n\n\nGordon Jameson\nI am interested in the ongoing layering of life\, ideas\, history\, personal stories\, and mythologies.  \nMy visual conversation is like poetry\, a whispered interval between the past and tomorrow\, subtracting and adding\, losing one thing but gaining something new. My images\, while abstract\, reference specific places\, events\, memories\, moments in a day\, or a road taken. It isn’t the literal I wish to find in my paintings but the idea or feeling of the experience of some place or time. \nConstructing the paintings involves catharsis\, seeking a balance and finding a concrete language for an idea that may be very fleeting – like holding fog in a crystal bowl. \n“All things are in process\, rising and returning…” – Lao-Tse \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoe Grant\nEmbracing the myriad relationships between science\, nature\, design and art allows many of my works to emerge. Science is creative but the language is limiting. Art has a wider vocabulary with which to interpret nature\, one that can employ the subjective experience. There is room for mysticism\, transcendence\, intuition\, hybridization\, feeling and emotion in art. \nCoaxing molten glass into a form that reflects my interests visually\, conceptually\, and functionally is at the forefront of my process. My efforts result in work that strikes a balance between control through technique and the serendipity created by working with an unpredictable\, molten liquid. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichele Maynard\nPandemic lockdown at my art studio resulted in a big shift in my work\, a silver lining in my COVID cloud. Not able to travel and spend time with family and friends\, I spent time with people and places by drawing and painting them from 30 years of photographs. My husband and I took these images while traveling and raising three sons\, but I never had adequate time to peruse and process all of them. Lockdown gave me an opportunity to do this\, and the photos became the basis of the body of work shown here. I went back to basics\, spending newfound blocks of time drawing with oil stick and oil pastel from compilations of images. After a few months\, I continued developing this new direction in acrylic and Flashe paint\, drawing on looser techniques I have employed in abstract pieces. \nThis is the most personal and deeply satisfying body of work I’ve ever done.

Using collage and mixed media Sudie’s art is a highly emotive and narrative representation of her inspiration—her love for the natural world. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Filley\nTruly mastering form\, function\, and beauty\, member artist\, Susan Filley creates exquisite functional and sculptural pieces from porcelain. Holding a cup of Susan’s in your hands or viewing one of her sculptural pieces the viewer is simply engrossed with the sumptuous and unique forms\, rich crystal glaze surfaces and vibrant colors of her work. In her own words\, “I strive to make pots that are beautiful and a pleasure to use\, forms that bold and well balanced\, and always a body of work that brings grace\, elegance\, and delight into our lives.” \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nR. Scott Horner\nAn abstract painter working mainly in acrylics\, the gallery is excited to have the paintings of R. Scott Horner for the first time at FRANK. “By methodically layering thick and thin skins of paint\, old events are covered up\, sometimes rediscovered through transparency or scratch-throughs. In this way\, the art builds its own history\, allowing the viewers to read into it many stories.” Though avoiding direct representation\, Scott is inspired by the world around him\, and with an enchanting color palette and his unique technique of layering\, the viewer is drawn into his interpretation of nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVince Pitelka\nA writer\, teacher\, and potter\, FRANK is thrilled to have the work of Vince Pitelka for the first time. Working in academia for 35 years and having taught clay workshops both nationally and internationally\, Vince now renders his many years of experience to his own clay studio and as member of the Chatham Artists Guild. Creating slab-built functional pottery and large coil-built vessels\, Vince’s work is known for his ability to impress intricate patterns on to his pottery. By carefully selecting glazes that highlight the beauty of his own carved bisque-stamps and rollers\, Vince creates sophisticated and highly unique textures and patterns which are imprinted on to the surfaces of his clay work as 3d relief. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPat Scull\nShowing her work in juried shows across the United States\, and featured for the first time at FRANK\, we are excited to have the mixed media and clay work of artist Pat Scull. Pat has a unique ability to have her artistic nuances and sensibilities translate so seamlessly from each medium of her choosing. “An explorer of artistic processes and mediums\, she creates her own imaginary world using clay\, paint\, wood\, found objects\, and metal.” Using organic forms\, textures\, colors\, and patterns\, one is able to venture into the inner world of Pat’s artistic mind through her incredible and intricate work.

SUMMARY:Featured Artists Exhibit for April/May 2021
DESCRIPTION:FEATURING Keith Allen\, Alan Dehmer\, Judith Ernst\, Jean Lecluyse\, Jim Oleson\, and Barbara Tyroler \nVIRTUAL OPENING RECEPTION APRIL 9 \nOpening on April 9th the gallery is excited to present a new exhibit featuring current FRANK member artists; woodworker/furniture maker Keith Allen\, wood sculptor Jim Oleson\, and photographer Barbara Tyroler and guest artists (and former members!) photographer Alan Dehmer\, ceramicist Judith Ernst\, and drawer/illustrator/mixed media artist Jean LeCluyse. With a common theme of trees\, the six featured artists showcase their extraordinary talents in a wonderful and cohesive exhibit at FRANK for the months of April and May. \n\n\n\nKeith Allen\nCreating works of functional artistic furniture\, self-taught artist Keith Allen emphasizes the natural nuances of wood and spotlights the once perceived flaws in his chosen material—all with a bit of whimsy. His striking pieces often use butterfly joints inspired by George Nakashima and he brings out the beautiful grain in his wood work by using geometric and brightly colored features. He draws inspiration from both his background as a mathematician and computer scientist as well as pioneer of modern furniture design\, Gerrit Rietveld. \n  \nJim Oleson\nA very accomplished furniture maker in his own right\, Jim Oleson\, has seamlessly transitioned into the art of sculpture making. A common theme with all of Jim’s work is his exceptional and imaginative designs and his incredibly high level of craftsmanship. Playing with shapes\, color\, kinetics\, and precision\, Jim’s sculptures are his creativity and imagination come to life. \n  \nBarbara Tyroler\nThe photography project that Barbara Tyroler be displaying began around the onset of the pandemic with a few nature walks inspired by three of her nature-loving students. Predominately a portrait photographer\, Barbara took this new creative inspiration and opportunity to focus on trees and how to incorporate people into the imagery. These fine art images of composited renditions of portrait/landscape photography will be showcased in FRANK in a series titled\, “Seeing-Trees; Memory\, Re-planting and Re-gifting\, featuring Charlotte\, a little girl and her relationship with the natural world. This series was awarded an artist grant and was juried into The Fence 2021 during the CLICK! Photo festival with selections exhibited at Through This Lens gallery during the FRANK:inFocus annual. After completing the fine art series\, Barbara extended the study to photographing social distanced portraits of friends\, students\, colleagues\, educators\, and some new acquaintances who graciously shared their knowledge of trees in this video which will also be displayed in this exhibit. \n  \nAlan Dehmer\nPhotographer and master of the process of gum bichromate printing\, artist Alan Dehmer takes two related art forms and combines them into photographs with an atmospheric sense of time and nature. A complex method of printing begins with Alan enlarging a negative of one of his own magnificent images\, and transforming the photographs through gum bichromate. Then using mostly mineral pigments and other organic materials like locally foraged walnut hulls\, turmeric\, and dyes like sandalwood and indigo\, he is able to achieve a painterly and evocative final art piece. What emerges through this developing/printing process is “a haunting beauty as well as depth of surface character that is uncommon in the world of photography.” \n  \nJudith Ernst\nAlways\, expertly\, testing the limits of her medium\, Judith Ernst creates incomparable sculptural\, and labor intensive ceramic vessels that are impeccably designed and glazed. Directly inspired by her life experiences\, studies\, and traveling abroad Judith developed a highly meticulous approach to building her ceramics. “Using sculptural techniques\, she cuts through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement\, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways.” The finished vessel is an incredibly unique\, energetic\, textural\, and exquisitely colored vessel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean LeCluyse\nCreating immensely detailed and magnificent works of art with a combination of drawing\, illustrating\, and mixed media\, Jean LeCluyse’s art are “windows into a ‘secret’ narrative.” Observing Jean’s artwork transports the viewer to a state of meditation\, examining each detailed nuance as a viewer\, one can get a glimpse into the complex story and skill of the artist. Jean’s work is directly inspired by her professional and artistic background in classical drawing and scientific illustration. Keeping with the underlying theme for this exhibit of trees\, Jean’s series for the upcoming exhibit will give the viewer a look into the extreme proficiency of her chosen medium.

SUMMARY:Live Reading: The Rope of Life by Mirinda Kossoff
DESCRIPTION:Please join us via Facebook Live for a reading an interview by local author and FRANK guest artist\, Mirinda Kossoff interviewed by Nora Gaskin. Mirinda’s highly anticipated book\, The Rope of Life: A Memoir\, is a daughter’s story told with love and compassion. Mirinda took one flight in her father’s Cessna Skyhawk as he piloted and navigated by landmarks that revealed themselves through openings in the trees below. A short three years later\, he was dead at age fifty-six. \nMemory of that ride fueled Kossoff’s desire to understand who her father was and the forces that shaped him. And by extension\, how he shaped her life. Her need to know and to understand became a life-long pursuit. As well as being an exceptional jeweler\, Her essays and creative writing have been passions she pursued alongside her day jobs. Always challenging the perfection of her technique and highly creative sensibilities\, her latest work is guaranteed to be distinctively unique and flawless as it always promises to be. \nRenowned and talented photographer John Rosenthal is always finding ways to tell a story in an inspiring way\, either with the written word or with his photography. John’s photos are incredibly emotive and transport the viewer to another time and place. With the ability to capture a perfect moment in time\, combined with a bit of mystery and brilliance\, John masterfully shares the story of his subject in a way true to his own narrative. \nWe are thrilled to have the incredibly talented Ippy Patterson\, exhibiting at the gallery. Having the artistic mastery to be able to render nearly any subject matter on paper\, Ippy works with ink\, pencil\, watercolor and charcoal in a highly intricate\, beautiful\, and graceful way.
