Opening Reception: Introducing Austin Cathey

Cathey’s body of work, which earned him this position as the FRANK Emerging Artist Apprentice, represents the human experience, and reflects on how memories are made and recorded. His drawings include washes of ink and watered down paints to add a fluidity, pigment, and dimension to his work. “When the washes interact with the drawing surface they immediately stain it, leaving a record, a memory, of their existence,” Cathey explains. “As the water slowly evaporates, only reticulations are left behind; always lighter and less vibrant than their original state.” He uses repetition and layers to reflect the abundance of memories that each individual experiences, and allows the audience to openly interpret his work.

We will celebrate our new show as a part of the 2nd Friday Artwalk with refreshments and music from Alison Weiner of Mahalo Jazz.

This exhibition is presented in the Michael and Laura Brader-Araje Community Outreach Gallery.
