Work in Progress: Sculpture from Philips Middle School

Student Sculpture and Photography Exhibition Reception
April 27, 2014
Sunday, 4-6PM

“Work in Progress” documents an artists-in-residency project at Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill.  Artists Mark Elliott (sculptor) and Barbara Tyroler (photographer) collaborated with Phillips Middle School art students in the creation and documentation of a permanent outdoor sculpture to be installed on school grounds.
Students learned basic design and construction techniques of scale model building as they created maquettes of their own unique visions.  The entire process was documented in photographs by Ms. Tyroler as well as the students themselves in collaboration with Ms. Tyroler.
Students, school and town administrators, art teacher Angela Greene and Mr. Elliott worked together to choose the final design and Mr. Elliott is in the process of fabricating the sculpture from plate steel. Installation on school grounds will take place in mid-May.
