Rosie Thompson
Process in my work involves Integrating contrasting materials like wood, paint, sheer & opaque fabrics, wire, paper, salvaged elements, video, sound, food, dirt, bones, fire, water and rocks to allow fusion and balancing of physical properties/boundaries, psychological space, and metaphysical ponderings in my Constructions and site and or context specific Installations. The scale of my work depends on the specific work...but more frequently than not my work is on a human scale. Larger scale Installations allow physical human habitation/engagement. Smaller scale constructions allow psychological spatial distancing and or engagement. Regardless of scale, my work always has a metaphysical spatial presence. The physical handling of contrasting materials, the conceptual balancing of the overt material differences to create a visual and psychological harmonious whole gives way to a metaphysical understanding of the "oneness of all” in my creative process.
Content in my work deals with the balancing of contrasting energies such as sensory/extra sensory and concrete/ephemeral to arrive at a harmonious equilibrium. The mixed media contrasting materials I use are metaphors for my mixed contrasting Ancestries and cultural traditions therein. The Content that emerges as I work with balancing these contrasting materials is a Shamanistic Celebration of the personal and Universal Drama in my/our human experience. The "quirky" and usually beautiful forms I create emerge from this balancing act.
The form in my work changes from series to series but the iconography developed over time has become a language that charges the metaphysical spatial field in all my work with energy.
