I am totally captivated by the seemingly endless possibilities offered by nature for the creation of my jewelry. As I look around my garden, I find shapes, patterns and textures that fuel my creative process. Sometimes these elements are drawn and etched onto brass and roll printed onto the silver. The shape that currently is reflected in my work is that of a sort of fungus which grew in my garden. Its undulating crevices and positive and negative areas offer an abundance of design possibilities.
Materials can also fuel my creative process particularly when color is involved. Using colored plexiglas with silver adds another dimension to my jewelry. It lends itself to the recurring “fungus” theme, as it can be handled much like silver, minus the heat and the hammers. The plexiglas and the occasional use of colored stones and gemstone beads satisfies my need for color in my jewelry.
One never knows from where the next creative jolt will come. But it will come. And it may exist in isolation for a time and then be combined with another element or two, and then be recombined with other ideas, elements, materials and processes. A rich tapestry results - evidence of the creative process at work. This is how things work for me. And even though I have not fully explored my current ideas, I always wonder what is around the next corner.
