Linwood Hart
I am an "ex farm boy" from Northern Granville county, NC.
I grew up on a Dairy and tobacco farm 10 miles north of Oxford and
have a BA in Speech Communication from North Carolina State University.
I live in Durham now but still own the farm in Granville and enjoy
the time I get to spend there. It acts as a second studio for me. As
the son of a farmer, I see life in a rhythmic series of sunrises and
sunsets. I paint with the memory of these landscapes and combine them
with my family imagery ......present and past. Sometimes they blend
in a soothing manner and other times they claw at each other. In each
combination I discover something beautiful. I paint with acrylics and
sometimes embed paper and fiber materials within the paint as I work.
Multiple layers are built up until at some point I start to scrape,
scar and melt the canvas to create the surface and texture I am seeking.
It is in the continual process of covering up then revealing of the
undercoats that my paintings come forward or recede on the canvas.
Some paintings become almost totally exposed while others become obliterated
by the last application of paint or materials. Painting sometimes allows
me to penetrate that outer shell, to cut back through, scrape away
and reveal some horrible or happy realization.
