Lolette Guthrie
Raised
in a household filled with art, I have been painting for as long as
I can remember. My father was an artist and my earliest memories are
of watching him work. He always urged me to explore my artistic interests
but discouraged me from pursuing art as a career. I, therefore, majored
in psychology and art history in college and became a teacher but
I never stopped making art. Eventually, I earned a BFA in fine art.
A fascination with the process of learning and a lifelong love of the natural world have been driving forces in my life and in my art. As a teacher, I loved discovering how to reach children by building up knowledge layer upon layer through constant evaluation, experimentation and revision. As an artist, I create images by building up layer upon layer of color, constantly evaluating and revising until I discover that the work is true. I find the concentrated stillness of making marks on a page or canvas and then playing with those marks to create interesting layers and visual energy is a form of meditation. Sometimes, my work is abstract; more often it is representational. Always, however, I strive to discover and convey the essence of what I see through exciting and thought provoking visual metaphors which, I hope, will help viewers to be open to the incredible beauty and diversity of the world around them.
