Mark Elliott

Mark Elliott My work is foremost a process. Finished pieces represent snapshots, shifts and transitions within that process. New work grows from, and is nourished by, past work. The process is neither direct nor constant; it is continuous. Concepts of truth in motion, existence, and the habits and tricks of perception fascinate me and propel my work.

I am inspired by ancient art forms, cultures and religions. Celtic pictographs, West African sculpture and ceremonial weapons, and Tibetan Buddhist mythology have timeless strength and influence. I am a prospector searching for universal symbols, pondering why one shape is full of meaning and value while another seems devoid of content. Playfulness and humor are qualities that seem to percolate up on their own and are parallel to the content of the work.

Twentieth century artists Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Jean Arp, Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Clifford Still and Brice Marden are also influences on my work.
